Winterize Your Home Like a Pro

As a real estate agent, I'm often asked about simple ways to prepare homes for the colder months. Whether you're buying, selling, or staying put, winterizing your home can save you money, prevent damage, and keep you cozy all season long. Here's your checklist to get started:

Outside Your Home:

  • Clean those gutters: Clogged gutters can lead to ice dams, which can cause serious water damage. Make sure your gutters are clear of leaves and debris.

  • Inspect your roof: Look for any missing or damaged shingles and get them repaired ASAP.

  • Seal up those gaps:  Caulk around windows and doors to prevent drafts and heat loss.

  • Disconnect hoses:  Detach and drain all garden hoses to prevent them from freezing and bursting.

  • Protect your outdoor faucets:  Use foam covers or wrap them with insulation to prevent freezing.

  • Service your heating system:  Schedule a professional inspection and cleaning for your furnace or heat pump to ensure it's running efficiently.

  • Prep your landscaping: Trim trees and shrubs away from your house to prevent damage from winter storms.

Inside Your Home:

  • Check your insulation: Make sure your attic, walls, and crawl spaces are properly insulated to keep the heat in.

  • Reverse your ceiling fans:  Switch your ceiling fans to rotate clockwise to push warm air down.

  • Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors:  Test the batteries and replace them if needed.

  • Prepare for power outages:  Have a backup power source, like a generator or portable power station, and stock up on flashlights and batteries.

  • Winterize your pipes: Insulate pipes in unheated areas like crawl spaces and attics to prevent freezing.

For Sellers:

  • Boost your curb appeal: Keep your driveway and walkways clear of snow and ice.
  • Highlight winter-friendly features: Showcase a fireplace, updated heating system, or well-insulated windows.
  • Create a cozy atmosphere:  Stage your home with warm throws, soft lighting, and seasonal decor.

For Buyers:

  • Inspect for drafts: Pay attention to any cold spots or drafts during showings.
  • Ask about insulation:  Inquire about the age and type of insulation in the home.
  • Check the windows: Look for signs of condensation or frost, which could indicate poor insulation.

By taking these simple steps, you can ensure your home is ready to weather the winter months. Stay warm and enjoy the season!
